I loved this book! Moving, without being overly-sentimental. The writing is beautiful, and I really felt like I knew the main character, Mary Grace. Her story as an immigrant and careworker in Canada highlights an experience that people have throughout our country every day. The unique narrator (her fetus) was a really effective choice, and not at all weird (which I thought it would be). This book is all about character development, Mary Grace's inner experiences, and relationship.I loved this book! Moving, without being overly-sentimental. What if Marie Antoinette could do magic? And if there was a secret order of magicians at work in the world? This is the premise of this alternate-history/fantasy novel that centres on two sisters: Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, and Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples. Both are outsiders, in more ways than one, and who want magic to do more good in the world. Unfortunately, they have conflicting approaches to achieving this. A mixture of magic, history, and espionage. What if Marie Antoinette could do magic? And if there was a secret order of magicians at work in the world? As someone who remembers the 80s and 90s, this books sparked soooo much nostalgia. If you loved The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and The Never Ending Story, then you should read this book! Imagine if the worlds in those stories weren't entirely fictional, and their ongoing existence depended on your actions here. That's what happens to the main character, the sone of the creator of the cult movie hit, The Shadow Glass. As someone who remembers the 80s and 90s, this books sparked soooo much nostalgia. Hilarious, heartbreaking, and enlightening. Jenny Lawson is quirky and funny, she uses her experiences with mental illness and chronic health conditions to breakdown barriers while making the reader laugh. I highly recommend the audiobook because she reads it herself. I'm reading this one for the third time, I like it so much.Hilarious, heartbreaking, and enlightening. Another great novel from Mary Lawson that deals with the complexities of relationships. Presented through three distinct voices, the story comes together through the different points of view, and it's all set against the distinctly Canadian back drop of a northern Ontario town.Another great novel from Mary Lawson that deals with the complexities of relationships. I couldn't put down this fast-paced novel that delves into the ethical questions around power the power of information. Will wakes up one day knowing about 108 events that will happen in the future. Some are of little consequence, while others have the potential to change the world as we know it. It all depends on what he will do with the knowledge.I couldn't put down this fast-paced novel that delves into the ethical questions around power the power of information. Hunger Games meets Wicked. Dorothy is not who we were duped into thinking, and Amy Gumm finds out the hard way. Transported in the standard way, via tornado, she lands in Oz to find it transformed by Dorothy and her henchmen into an oligarchy. What is good and what is wicked? It's hard to say as the wicked witches work to overthrow Dorothy the dictator, and Amy has no choice but to help. Magic, munchkins, and the Emerald City are all familiar elements, with the addition of violence, chaos, and manipulation.Hunger Games meets Wicked. This beautifully written novel brings to life the woman and place that inspired Andrew Wyeth's painting, "Christina's World". Alternating between Christina's memories of her youth and her life as a middle-aged woman, the story reveals her struggles and triumphs as she manages with limited function in her legs and hands, and how the home that nurtured generations of her family both isolates and frees her. When the painter Andrew Wyeth enters her life, his paintings and perceptions force Christina to see herself and the place to which she belongs in a new way, one that challenges her understanding of her family and her choices in life. This beautifully written novel brings to life the woman and place that inspired Andrew Wyeth's painting, "Christina's World".
