A novel by John Green, what do you expect. John Green is known for writing heart-wrenching love stories that are guaranteed to make you cry buckets and buckets until you can't cry anymore. This story is no exception. A story of a boy that goes to a boarding school and joins the "wrong crowd" as he states in the beginning of the story. In the story, he begins as an outsider, alone and obsessed with famous last words. He finishes the story an outsider, obsessed with famous last words, but less alone. He faces death, lust, love, jealousy, and guilt. He faces growing up, and all the troubles that come along for the ride. An interesting story that starts out a bit slow, but turns into a page turner. A read for older audiences due to the subject matter.A novel by John Green, what do you expect. I do enjoy a good piece of historical fiction. This one is no exception. Eliza Bates tells her tale of war, from Canada. She tells of her brothers abroad, her fears, and her nightmares. A bit annoying in the beginning, Eliza is a character that will grow on you, as you become attached to her, and her family. She refers to you as "Dear Reader", as she adores Jane Eyre, reminiscent of Charlotte Brontë. Jean Little tells Eliza's tale in a fashion that transports you back to her time. You can feel the fear as the postman approaches, with the looming possibility of awful news about her family. A tale of love, and fear that will keep you entertained until the last page of the story has been turned.I do enjoy a good piece of historical fiction. This one is no exception. Wow. This is a truly amazing book. Friends with Boys is the story of a girl who starts high school after being homeschooled by her mother who left her family. She is also haunted by a dead woman. This is a story that deals with many topics that kids in high school will understand. There is prejudice against people that are different, there is death, there is guilt, there is love. It isn't just love between lovers either, it is familial love, and there is also friendly love. Another thing in this book that can't go without mentioning is the art. Personally, I adore the art style used in this book. It may be the fact that I adore the characters hairstyles, or the way the author draws ghosts, but it is probably one of my favourite books art wise (for one of my other favourites, see Killjoys by Gerard Way/Shaun Simon/Becky Cloonan). Overall, an intriguing book with amazing art and a fantastic story line.Wow. This is a truly amazing book. "The future is bulletproof, the aftermath is secondary. It's time to do it now and do it loud. Killjoys, make some noise."
To the sorry few that haven't read this book and it's album, the above will seem like a code, or a bunch of random words slung together. To those that have listened and read the previously mentioned, you will have heard these words and sing, dance, scream, and cry. This book follows the story after the story in the My Chemical Romance album Danger Days. It is an odd concept, having an album and a comic linked in such a way, but it is done seamlessly. Gerard Way (lead singer of My Chemical Romance) and Shaun Simon weave together a beautifully crafted story that is only enhanced by the art of Becky Cloonan. I recommend this book to fans of action, fans of amazing art, rebels, and all those in love with Rock and Roll.
Just a side note, but I would recommend listening to the album and watch it's corresponding music videos. They will really help explain the backstory a bit, as that isn't really explained in the book. (My only negative point.)"The future is bulletproof, the aftermath is secondary. An amazing read. This book will appeal to fans of all things that go bump in the night. (The fact that it has a quote from a review by Neil Gaiman should be a hint as to the intended audience of the book). This book is about the supernatural, but it also relatable to teenage girls that struggle with their daily lives. Everything from catcalls to embarrassments to friendship to smoking is addressed in this wonderful tail. I recommend this to girls, both living and recently departed. An amazing read.
