F for classic mythology, but A for soap-opera value. At first I was horrified with this series for bastardizing Britian’s great cycle of Arthurian myths, diminishing its classic tales and noble themes to petty human schemes, scrapes, and foibles, and letting Merlin upstage King Arthur as the far stronger, sexier, more complex figure. But after watching the series for a while, I ended up thoroughly enjoying it for what it is: a trashy, sensational, entertaining, suspense-filled, medieval-costumed potboiler. Despite the bad press it received, fans of soap operas especially should give it a chance.F for classic mythology, but A for soap-opera value. Helpful narrative dramatizing the harm children do to each other by hurtful teasing, how kids can respond to it constructively, and the difference between tattling (when you're trying to get someone into trouble) versus reporting (when you're trying to help someone in trouble.)Helpful narrative dramatizing the harm children do to each other by hurtful teasing, how kids can respond to it constructively, and the difference between tattling (when you're trying to get someone into trouble) versus reporting (when you're trying…

Mary Mac’s Tea Room is the last one still standing of Atlanta’s 16 post-World-War-II so-called tea rooms--establishments that actually served such small-town southern comfort food as fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, barbequed ribs, jumbalaya, hush puppies, pecan pie, and Georgia peach cobbler. This collection of recipes, published in 2010 by the restaurant’s latest owner, also includes a few items of more traditional teatime fare (e.g., buttermilk biscuits and banana bread), as well as a nutritionally insane excess of sugar (e.g., 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar in tomato sauce, 1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar in cole slaw!) Amusing send-up of conventional fairy tales with witty diction and an ogre instead of a prince as protagonist.

Simple, lucid, engaging story and pictures that are helpful for beginners in French Immersion (since they typically start learning Hallowe'en vocabulary during the first autumn of the program.) I was sincerely impressed by this film’s attempts to reconstruct the mysterious lives and warfare methods of ancient British tribes during the Roman occupation. (An imperial bust in the Roman fort suggests the narrative took place during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius from 138 to 161 C.E.) Director Kevin Macdonald carefully based his depictions of the tribe called the Seal People on authentic clues gained from places like Skara Brae and the Tomb of the Eagles in Orkney (although he makes them speak Gaelic instead of the extinct Pictish language they would more likely have used.) I also admired the dynamics of the master-slave role reversal that occurs in the plot, as well as the film’s recurring heroic references to loyalty, family honour, and the belief that a person’s word is his or her bond—all very Celtic values, both in the ancient world and today.I was sincerely impressed by this film’s attempts to reconstruct the mysterious lives and warfare methods of ancient British tribes during the Roman occupation. The two wannabe-celebrity sisters who authored this book made the fateful decision to run their Manhattan establishment (after which the book is named) as a combination of tearoom cum global-fusion-style lunch counter cum children’s party emporium. The resulting recipes and food presentations seem garish to Anglo teatime purists like my friend Babs and me. We have never visited their restaurant (and probably won’t), but we also suspect the place would lack the tranquil atmosphere required for a traditional British afternoon tea.The two wannabe-celebrity sisters who authored this book made the fateful decision to run their Manhattan establishment (after which the book is named) as a combination of tearoom cum global-fusion-style lunch counter cum children’s party emporium. …

Better-than-nothing documentary and re-enactment of the history of the King James Version of the Bible, a translation published by the Church of England in 1611. Unfortunately, the film should have been much more informative and incisive about the book’s enduring spiritual and linguistic impact on British culture—which was enormous.Better-than-nothing documentary and re-enactment of the history of the King James Version of the Bible, a translation published by the Church of England in 1611.
