A quick read. You definitely want to read the ending although much of the foreshadowing is very obvious and repetitive. Too much deceit in the modern relationship, abortion is too casually accepted as the right and only possible decision, the ending is not a loving conclusion but tensely feminist. A book that leaves you feeling unhappy.A quick read. You definitely want to read the ending although much of the foreshadowing is very obvious and repetitive. Although I love Ann Patchett, and most of this book is as wonderful as her other books, I found several parts of this book very annoying as she seems somewhat tone deaf about her wealth. Lengthy sections about her husband buying airplanes. Friends that own a jet and can take another friend to a special hospital. It's a bit much.Although I love Ann Patchett, and most of this book is as wonderful as her other books, I found several parts of this book very annoying as she seems somewhat tone deaf about her wealth. Fascinating biography written in a novel style. I especially like that wherever Dostoevsky's own words are used, they are printed in italics.

beautifully written; unexpected insights into relationships between people, between a dog and its owner, grieving someone who was actually quite despicable. Hardly a 'story', more a long reflection.

Beautifully written, thought provoking. No happy Hollywood ending, just a very true telling of the sad consequences in a life. This is so real, it feels as if the author is retelling what she heard from a prisoner she was visiting.

I looked forward to each chapter to see what twists it would bring to the original story. A great plot wonderfully well written.

A fast fun read with interesting ideas that stick in your heard for a long time.
Good twist at the end (but don't read ahead because it won't make sense unless you've read the rest of the book!)

interesting enough to keep you reading, but fairly maudlin, melancholy. Also a tendency to be philosophical and 'deep' without actually making much sense.

This book seems to be a collection of articles written to be used for different purposes.
If you skip the ones that have no meaning to you, and just read the ones that you do have an interest in, you will enjoy those essays enormously. Insightful, interesting, moving, unexpected writing. I recommend the chapters on Liberia, Dead Men Laughing (the comic timing of her stand up comedian relative), Accidental hero (her father's time in WW II), her notes on an Oscar weekend. (I meant to give the book 4 stars, but hit the computer screen at the wrong place, and apparently can't be changed)This book seems to be a collection of articles written to be used for different purposes.

I wondered whether the author had some ocd, but has been able to turn this to her advantage. The section in which she writes about her handbags is troubling - she seems to 'love' so many handbags, she needs to store them inside of each other, in order to find space for them all??? Nevertheless, I have followed much of the advice in the book, and have looked forward to cleaning my drawers and cupboards!I wondered whether the author had some ocd, but has been able to turn this to her advantage.
