This book is beautiful, one of my favorites. The dream like quality of the text's rhythm evokes perfectly the feeling of those summer nights as a child, the child's view of her parents, the hopes the dreams. I just love this book. I grew up near NY though, lived in city apartments as a child, and before most of us of modest means had air conditioning, so I can easily summon up the images of a tar beach and why you'd go up to the roof to play cards and sleep on a hot summer's night ; not sure if it would resonate as much for country dwellers. Lovely lovely book.

I love this book because it reflects real life along with a little girl's dreams of it.
