The Hobbit is one of the greatest fantasy sagas of all time, a classic that has captivated generations of readers and is now an eagerly anticipated film by Peter Jackson, Academy Award-winning director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. When Thorin Oakenshield and his band of dwarves embark upon a dangerous quest to reclaim the hoard of gold stolen from them by the evil dragon Smaug, Gandalf the wizard suggests an unlikely accomplice: Bilbo Baggins, an unassuming Hobbit dwelling in peaceful Hobbiton. Along the way, the company faces trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and worse. But as they journey from the wonders of Rivendell to the terrors of Mirkwood and beyond, Bilbo will find that there is more to him than anyone--himself included--ever dreamed. Unexpected qualities of courage and cunning, and a love of adventure, propel Bilbo toward his great destiny . . . a destiny that waits in the dark caverns beneath the Misty Mountains, where a twisted creature known as Gollum jealously guards a precious magic ring. © New Line Productions, Inc. Note that this particular copy is a pocket edition. The book is about 4.5"x6" and the print is very small and hard to read. I ended up returning it and borrowing the standard edition.

Very well written book and definitely better than the movie.

Great classic! I particularly liked the beginning (when describing hobbit life) and the end (where the battles takes place). The middle dragged a little, when they were taking journeys. But all in all, a great read!

The book has a very different tone than the Peter Jackson movies. It is meant to be a children's book, albeit one drawing on Norse and other mythologies and legends. The book is so influential, well beyond fantasy, that it is worth reading even if only to better appreciate so many cultural references that allude to it. This edition is definitely the one to get: Tolkien's own original art and the cover almost exactly as he designed it.

One of the first books I remember reading some many decades gone. And reading aloud to my girls. Will I read it aloud someday to grandchildren?

I definitely wasn't my favorite book but I like how creative the story and characters were and how J.R.R. Tolkien worded is book. I think his Lord of the Rings series, including the Hobbit, was very original.

The beginning was a bit slow, but when Gandalf first appeared, the story began to pick up and I could not put this book down!

"It likes riddles ... does it?" Gollum

Voiceless it cries,
Wingless it flutters,
Toothless it bites,
Mouth less it mutters.

Chip the glasses and crack the plates! /
Blunt the knives and bend the forks! /
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates-- /
Smash the bottles and burn the corks! //
Cut the cloth and tread on the fat! /
Pour the milk on the pantry floor! /
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat! /
Splash the wine on every door! //

Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl; /
Pound them up with a thumping pole; /
And when you've finished, if any are whole, /
Send them down the hall to roll!

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! carefully with the plates!

"You don't really suppose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your sole benefit? You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!"-Gandalf
