This was the big moneymaker that Pixar released after 'Toy Story' and I can't help but feel that John Lasseter sort of rested on his haunches a little bit and got lazy while making this, I could just imagine him sitting on a couch at his house dictating everything via phone while watching Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai'. Not a very inspired story with some unoriginal characters. It wasn't terrible, I just believe it's a bit of a blip comapred to a lot of other Pixar films.

We have watched this twice, each time with a different grandson, and everyone found it funny and imaginative. It also allowed some discussion of bullying and how the youngest ants were least intimidated.

I just saw A Bug's Life for first time this week. Got it from the library for my 3 year old to watch and she loved it. However, compared to Pixar's stronger movies (Toy Story 2, Wall-E, Up!, etc.) this wasn't as good. Maybe it is just showing its age. The animation isn't as strong as the newer movies, which is to be expected though. However, I found the plot to be too simplistic and predicatable, and many of the characters were fairly stereotypical. Still, don't get me wrong. This is a fun movie, there are funny parts, silly characters, and all that. Just not as good as many other Pixar films. I think Pixar should make a 2nd one instead of Cars 2 as it would be neat to see what they would do now with the characters and setting.

Flik is an individualist and would-be inventor in a colony of ants — led by Princess Atta and her mother, The Queen — living on a small island in the middle of a creek. Flik is different and always unappreciated because of his inventions causing trouble. The colony is constantly oppressed by a gang of marauding grasshoppers who arrive every season demanding food from the ants. However, when an offering that the ants were putting together to appease the grasshoppers is accidentally knocked into a stream by Flik's latest invention, a harvester device, the grasshoppers demand twice as much food at the end of the season. Given a temporary reprieve by the grasshoppers, the ants pretend to agree to Flik's plan to recruit "warrior bugs" to fight off the grasshoppers. While Flik actually believes in the plan, the other ants see it as a fool's errand to get rid of Flik.
