Jitterbug Perfume

Robbins, Tom

(Book - 2003)
Average Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
Jitterbug Perfume
Jitterbug Perfume is an epic. Which is to say, it begins in the forests of ancient Bohemia and doesn't conclude until nine o'clock tonight (Paris time). It is a saga, as well. A saga must have a hero, and the hero of this one is a janitor with a missing bottle. The bottle is blue, very, very old, and embossed with the image of a goat-horned god. If the liquid in the bottle actually is the secret essence of the universe, as some folks seem to think, it had better be discovered soon because it is leaking and there is only a drop or two left.

Along with Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates, one of my favorite books of all time, and certainly my favorite Tom Robbins. Even a certain loss of direction in the latter part of the book did not reduce my sense of joy and wonder in reading this book. Fantasy with a lesson and comedy of the most advanced sort.

If you were not a fan of Tom Robbins you will be after reading this book. Enjoy, I'm sure you will.

Tom Robbins has mastered the art of words beautifully.

One of my favourites. Beautifully written. Quirky. The story of the universal desire for eternal life, a journey of a thousand years in search of the essence of life as found in the subtle tones and notes of perfumes. A textbook for living - in the moment - in enjoyment.

If you like beets, this book is for you. If you want to live forever, this book is for you too. Perfume, immorality, a 1,000 year-old janitor searching for his lost love, what else do you need in a novel?

An enjoyable and sometimes complex read that makes you look at how you live your life. Makes you want to put more effort into truly and deeply enjoying the now.
