Groundhog Day

There is an old belief that everyone is rewarded with the heaven or hell that he deserves. For Phil, the nasty, self-centered weather forecaster in "Groundhog Day," that hell reveals itself one morning in the Groundhog Capitol of the USA, Punxsutawney, Pa. He has journeyed there to do a remote broadcast about his namesake, the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, and wakes up the next morning in the same bed, with the radio playing the same song, and it gradually becomes clear to him that he is reliving precisely the same day.

Classic? In the minor key yes: perfect! comedy ensemble casting and a clever script that updates the old Beauty and The Beast story.
But it could've been a major classic if, for instance, they'd had the hero stuck in that day for a few hundred years [psychological growth anyone?].
Instead they went for quick laughs, sentimentality, and a classic Hollywood ending [sappy].
But i guess a film with added Serious elements would've been a whole other movie [that would've bombed!].
Very good, not great.

I appreciate this movie now more than when it first came out.

A true classic.

Unlike Bill Murray's experience of February 2nd, this movie never gets old. It's both funny and insightful, and works equally well (I imagine) for people with no sense of humour (it's that deep..) or with no depth (it's that funny..). You can't lose, really.

Another one of my all-time faves! LOVE Bill Murrey. Great cast, brilliant story.

Although the writing was merely decent, this is a comedic performance that could've only been pulled off by Bill Murray.

This is my all-time favorite movie and, in my view, where Bill Murray is at his best (second to the first Ghost Busters). It has even become a joke in our family to poke fun at each other with lines from GHD, like "Don't drive angry"! At first, I watched it for the fun. After all, only Bill Murray can make me laugh hard by just standing there and staring, either with a quizzical or an utterly blank look. But then I started seeing another side to the story, deeper, with a message. As I am no movie critic, I can only say that, in my humble view, the selfish, bitter, megalomaniac egocentric character Bill Murray plays, suffers a radical transformation throughout the movie. The ones who have had the luck of seeing a butterfly come out of a cocoon will certainly forgive me for comparing the Phil of the beginning of the movie with an imprisoned larva, and the one at the end with the hesitantly delicate butterfly slowly coming out to the world. If that's not enough to make you watch the movie, read this review from Jonah Goldberg--certainly a much better writer: "A Movie for All Time" http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/228088/movie-all-time/jonah-goldberg (The article is really worth reading!)

A funny, clever film that plays around with time, repeating the same day over and over again without getting repetitive. Bill Murray is a self absorbed weather man turning up in Pennsylvania for the annual groundhog festivities, but quickly finds himself trapped as the same day keeps repeating, and he's the only one aware of it. He gives a tremendous performance that shows just how good an actor he can be, mixing some of his usual wiseguy routine with pathos, despair, and empathy for his fellow man as he goes from being an egomaniac and a jerk to ultimately becoming a better human being for it. Some of the best humour derives from his realization that there are no consequences to anything he happens to do, and Murray has tremendous chemistry with Andie MacDowell throughout the film. An exceptional film, and it holds up even better over time.
