The death of Sir Edward Crick has unleashed a torrent of gossip through the seedy taverns and elegant ballrooms of Oxfordshire. Few mourn the dissolute young man- except his sister, the beautiful Lady Lydia Farrell. When her husband comes under suspicion of murder, she seeks expert help from Dr. Thomas Silkstone, a young anatomist from Philadelphia. Thomas arrived in England to study under its foremost surgeon, where his unconventional methods only add to his outsider status. Against his better judgment he agrees to examine Sir Edward's corpse. But it is not only the dead, but also the living, to whom he must apply the keen blade of his intellect. And the deeper the doctor's investigations go, the greater the risk that he will be consigned to the ranks of the corpses he studies.

Although the author is a little too fond of red herrings, she writes well and displays her historical and scientific knowledge in a way that's both subtle and interesting.

The book was okay – but not one of my favorites.

Very good with historical details and a nice twisty plot.

Very interesting plot. Just when you think you know "who'd done it"; new clues/facts proves otherwise. The ending is surprising.

I couldn't put the book down since I want to find out who did it!

Chose this title because it seemed like another I had enjoyed in the past called "The Alienist." It wasn't. A simple and quick read from what appears to be a new author with (perhaps) promise for future offerings.

A chillling, gothic tale about the death of a young english lord. Who killed him? Was it his jealous and malevolent brother in law who stands to gain much from the unfortunates demise? An anatomist-protagonist named Dr. Thomas risks his reputation and perhaps his own well being to find the answers and assist the grieving sister of Lord Crick. This being the first in a series of mysteries involving the good doctor. Looking forward to following his risky and gruesome career!
