Wow. This is a truly amazing book. Friends with Boys is the story of a girl who starts high school after being homeschooled by her mother who left her family. She is also haunted by a dead woman. This is a story that deals with many topics that kids in high school will understand. There is prejudice against people that are different, there is death, there is guilt, there is love. It isn't just love between lovers either, it is familial love, and there is also friendly love. Another thing in this book that can't go without mentioning is the art. Personally, I adore the art style used in this book. It may be the fact that I adore the characters hairstyles, or the way the author draws ghosts, but it is probably one of my favourite books art wise (for one of my other favourites, see Killjoys by Gerard Way/Shaun Simon/Becky Cloonan). Overall, an intriguing book with amazing art and a fantastic story line.

Friends With Boys is a teenage slice of life story. Maggie is dealing with the first day of school. Not just the first day of the year, nor is it simply her first day of high school. This is Maggie's first day of school...ever.

A guide to a teen's first year in high school full of all the ups and downs, relationships, and family issues that are the core of the teen experience. The biggest fear of our heroine is change though, this manifests in many ways, she is quite conscious of any kind of change around her (eg. her dad's haircut, her brother's fighting, changing from home school to public). The thing that keeps your attention though is the mysterious circumstances between Alister, Daniel (Maggie's brother) and Matt...what you do in high school marks what you will be like for the rest of your life, and these three show three different types: one was a popular jerk, but changed for the better, one was bullied, but remains kind, and the last is a popular bully who won't change. The only thing that doesn't make much sense is the ghost. It seems like it was put in as an attempt to make a plot, whereas this is a character driven story and doesn't need it. Even with these loose ends, it is a top-tier graphic novel.

Quite a sweet, quirky little story that, while aimed at adolescents, is a satisfying quick read for an adult.

Really liked this -- it was a sweet, insightful (and humorous) read! And surprisingly great art at times. One of the Hub Reading Challenge eligible titles.
