This is pretty much a straight-up historical mystery, except for the fact that Kaille (and various others) can also work spells. The “magical” element is an integral part of the plot, and Jackson does a very good job of making it believable in an otherwise mundane “real life” world.

An urban fantasy story with a twist. Not only is it set in the past, Ethan Kaille is a departure from the normal female protagonist of the genre. He reminded me a lot of Jim Butcher's character Harry Dresden (see the book Storm Front). Great characters with a fun mix of history and magic.

Good story. I will be seeking out more by D.B. Jackson.
Good characters, reasonable feel for historic local and behaviors.
The magic is the dullest part. Very mechanical and repetitive.
