The focal characters are John Ware-a gentle giant with a quiet soul; Mary Fields, a fierce and true western woman; Nat Love, a fast-talking gunman; Bass Reeves, an illiterate law man; and Cherokee Bill, born into violence and becomes it. Behind them all is Wallace Chauncey, fueled by rage.
