Many, many years ago I viewed my 'first' Kurosawa film, "Dersu Uzala" and hated it immensely. I mostly avoided Kurosawa films until recently - finding "Dodes' ka-den" and "Rhapsody in August" equally unbearable. After reading some…

Masterpiece through and through and should be a must visit for any film fan.

Toshiro Mifune stars in Akira Kurosawa’s classic 1961 action feature, later adapted quite closely as "A Fistful of Dollars." About a lone swordsman who plays two rival bands of thieves against one another, the 110-minute feature is highly…

This is an amazing movie and is one of the best samurai movies in Japan with Toshiro Mifune acting as the Samurai.

To rid a terror-stricken village of corruption, the wily masterless samurai Sanjuro turns a range war between two evil clans to his own advantage. Remade twice by Sergio Leone and Walter Hill, this exhilarating, fascinating and funny…

One of Akira Kurosawa's most popular films in Japan. He deliberately combined the samurai story with the Western so that the wind-swept main street could be in any frontier town, and the samurai (Toshiro Mifune) could be a…

This is a follow-up to Yojimbo, which I think is a better film compared to this sequel. Despite the thumbs-up reviews by film critics, I find Sanjuro to be one of the lesser films by Kurosawa in the samurai genre. The story is cliche and…

This is a brilliant work! Humorous while so serious a theme. A sequel to Yojimbo, I find this a much better film. The ronin puts the real samurai as the opposite of the ideal.

This is one of earlier works by Kurosawa on the samurai genre. The film is so old that this film copy fills only 1/4 of TV screen. But the B/W images are sharp and the sound track is good. Although there is a little bit of 'over acting'…

[for yojimbo] Suspenseful, funny, dramatic, with some really good scenes, interestingly shot (such as near the end where a man hanging with his arms tied behind him is in the foreground). The music adds a lot to the movie; I suppose one…

[for sanjuro] A terrific samurai film! One has to read quickly to get key information regarding the plot (otherwise one misses it and the actions and events quickly lose their sense); the fights are quite fast, and most of the fun is in…

Sometimes funny, sometimes haunting, always intense. Yojimbo is one of the classics of the samurai genre, and it's status as one of the original 'westerns' is unrivaled. Featuring memorable characters, beautiful set pieces and the (as…

Better than its predecessor, Yohimbo, as this one stresses the drama and tones down the bad comedy.

Good to see these Kurosawa films being released on dvd. Mifune was a very special actor and Kurosawa is to be praised for his unsentimental films. The extras on the dvd were worth watching and showed Kurosawa's fanatical attention to…

Watched it while the clock strikes 1 after Halloween.. yeah, a halloween extravaganza with its gore & violence pre-Quentin Tarantino with a comedic touch.

Yojimbo and Rashomon are Kurosawa's masterpiece subversions/elevations of the samurai film. Sanjuro is his perfect embodiment of the samurai film. This movie is not particularly clever in subverting story conventions. It is a solidly told,…

A great game would be to watch Yojimbo (Starring Toshiro Mifune), then A Fistful of Dollars (starring Clint Eastwood), then Last Man Standing (starring Bruce Willis). The process will give the viewer a lesson in how remakes are not…

This is an Akira Kurosawa film with Toshiro Mifune as the title Samurai character. I found that reading the booklet that came with the Dvd helped me understand some of the problems they had with the making of this movie and the ingenious…

Humourous yet thought-provoking, this film is one of the best samurai movies in Japan. Mind-boggling is the last duel scene of Sanjuro and Hanbei---the antagonist. The behind-the-scene story reveals that the shocking "blood explosion" at…
