This is how you tell a story worth reading. It’s meaningful, compelling, and takes you on a journey. Perfect for an intellectually motivated audience interested in history and the tribulations of women and slaves.

A great book but it does drag. Definitely worth reading.

Very good book documenting slavery in the USA. Well researched and a true story. It was so good I read it twice.

What a tedious and boring book. There is probably a great story in there somewhere but, by the time I was a third of the way through, I gave up trying to find it. Too much useless trivia.

The writing is much like poetry. She helps you feel even smell the atmosphere with words. Words. I’m so grateful to learn this is a based on true story of women and men who fought for abolition and womens rights both! Truly humbled by…

Great deal of research and detail - not too long - Enjoyed it but very sad part of American history. Story of two Sisters, Sarah & Nina Grimke who were to become the first women to speak out about slavery. Very well written. Freedom -…

A historical novel based around the imagined lives of real people when the colour of your skin determined your worth. So much bravery and sadness in the lives of the two main female characters. A wonderful narrative on a dark time

Although inspired by actual events, this is at heart a novel and it represents the very best of that genre. In reading it I learned some things and I was kept interested and engaged. Sue Monk Kidd is an extraordinarily accessible writer…

A very timely and fascinating read about the early days of the abolitionist movement in the United States which was launched by Mennonite/Quakers at the 1688 Germantown, PA Protest Against Slavery. Their petition was minimized and ignored…

A particularly gifted author. I appreciate that the way it was written using the voice of alternate characters allowed me to put it down when I read through heavy parts that required time to digest. (It also helps facilitate picking up…

I highly recommend this book. It was a page -turner as the lives of two women unfold and intertwine. The historical accuracy the author offers at the end of the book was so interesting. I wish I would have known the Grimke sisters were…

Sue Monk Kidd does a great job writing about difficult historical periods and bringing her characters to life.

I'm always a bit disappointed with an Oprah recommend. Doesn't feel deep enough for me. Anyway this is the fictional story of the real life Sarah Grimkes, who fought against slavery, & her slave that was gifted to her at the age of eleven.…

The writing was well done. I love at the end of the book that the author added information about the real life story, and what changes she made for her version of it

Oprah gets it! This book is another Oprah favourite! And rightfully so! well researched, I can see and feel what the characters were going through the time of slavery and women pre-emancipation. I like how these two types of slavery…

One of the best books I have read in a long time. I could not put this book down and read late into the night. Based on the lives of the Grimke family, slave owners in Charleston in the 1800's. Two of the sisters, Sarah and Nina, are…

People. Based on the lives of the Grimke sisters, who devoted their lives to the abolition of slavery.

I am mortified that I did not know about the Grimke sisters until I read this book. The dual storylines of Sarah and Handful were very effective in revealing the attitudes toward slaves in both the North and the South and how radical the…

This was an exciting read that held my interest all the way through. I wish there was more time to dedicate to Sarah Grimke's career as an abolitionist, but I highly recommend the book.
