The character building wasn't quite as strong towards the end whereas I thought Celest might have stayed steadfast in her search for love and not stayed with Roy. This is not because Roy was imprisoned but because the marriage was…

Well, this was a real downer for me. I should have known, since all of Oprah's book club picks that I've come across have the same criteria: troubling, painful, disturbing, or devastating. Young upwardly mobile married couple Celestial…

The premise of this book - looking at the progression of a marriage impacted by incarceration - is intriguing, but once I had finished I felt a little let down. I had trouble caring about a relationship when from the start it's clear it…

I had heard rave reviews on this book, and found it mediocre. I couldn't love or get connected to any of the characters. Although the story line was great, it was just an average read for me.

One of the most compelling reads I have encountered. This book will have you frustrated at one moment and elated at the next. A great examination of race and marriage in the US.

A twisty, turny, thoughtful book about marriage, love, race and how life rarely goes the way we plan. I burned through this in 2 days. I think this would be a great book club pick!
