A novel to be remembered for a long. The story is painful, and I think that makes it more memorable. Outstanding nature imagery of water, ocean waves, cats, rats and snakes. The language is poetic and captivating. Ultimately, I…

I'm in the vast minority here but I really didn't enjoy this book. I liked the history of this time period but the women characters just felt like they were written by a man. (Of course many men have written excellent women characters-just…

Good historical fiction about the geisha culture of the 1930s and 40s. I’m impressed at how well the author was able to write about the subject as if it were an autobiography - he must have really done his homework. The book was able to…

I read this years ago & must have enjoyed it since I checked out the audio for a review (and nothing else on my list available.) Normally I like this narrator, not for this tedious account. Yes, I too, thought the geisha info was…

At first I thought this was a memoir, but it's not; it's a novel. When I thought that, I was OK with it, but didn't like the narrator much. Once I realized it was a novel, I liked it even less, for the same reason. However, the Geisha…

This is one of those books I’ve been meaning to read for a while and finally got around to it. An excellent fictional look into the secret lives of geisha. Makes me want to find a non-fiction book and learn more.
