Random House has seen the future and, in the case of dictionaries at least, the future is simultaneous publication in traditional and electronic formats. Nothing can replace the traditional unabridged on its lectern in the library reference room, and the revised and updated Random House Unabridged is the only completely updated American unabridged since Random House produced the original second edition (The Random House Dictionary of the English Language: Second Edition, Unabridged) in 1987. It also includes a new color Atlas of the World, a particular boon in the current climate of raging neo- nationalism. However, the CD-ROM version of the Unabridged, developed by the WordPerfect Corporation, contains the text of all the entries in the book, with DOS, Windows, and Macintosh versions on the same CD, and seven different ways to access information. We are a bit surprised, however, that Random House, with its continually upgraded, computerized database, makes no mention of issuing the CD version in regular interim revisions. The book and CD-ROM are available individually for $100. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
