An outstanding collection of short stories. Carver is a master of the genre, realistically capturing the minute details of the trials and tribulations of human relationships as well as individuals' feeble and unsuccessful attempts to find happiness through self-medication.
I slogged through half of this story collection before giving up. I only liked 1 or 2 of the stories, and even then Carver's style did not resonate with me. Many of his characters seemed too unreal, and their frequent naivete was annoying. I consider myself a fairly open-minded reader, but the seeming randomness of where his stories start and where they end just did not work for me.
