I was introduced to Kathryn Harrison's memoir, The Kiss, by a former professor. He suggested studying her writing style and approach to delicate and controversial topics. What I found was a simple truth in her words as she shares her experiences of trauma and abuse throughout her life. The book is a fairly quick and easy read, but long after finishing, its words will haunt you. As far as the subject content in this book, it does not tip-toe around abuse. It transports you there where you can feel what she felt. Having a 'higher tolerance' to topics such as sexual abuse, I do recommend this read to tolerant readers as it helps shed light on how survivors are groomed, manipulated and brainwashed by abusers. This memoir does a beautiful job at breaking down the disastrous myth that sexual abuse only occurs violently. With guidance, this book *may* be suitable for older and mature teen readers, though it certainly does feature adult content.

June 1 2013, I guess I could say I started this today, but I'm reading 4 books at a time (Into the Abyss, Reluctant Pioneer, The Kiss, and Prisoners of the North,) so which one will win out as my "main" read, remains to be seen! (I might read this one first, as it is very small) (and interesting too!).....June 2, finished this today. The description given in the "item details" is a very good summary. I don't think I can do better than that. In reading the book, I was transfixed, disturbed, mesmerized, horrified. I had to keep reminding myself that it was not a novel, as what I was reading was so disturbing that I found it hard to get my mind around the fact that it was true. I will read more of Kathryn's books. She truly is a gifted writer, and a very brave one also. This story will stick with me, and I will be sure to remember it in times of adversity. Going to pass it on to a friend before I return it. Should spark some great conversation!
