This is one of my favorite children's picture books ever, because it captures the specific quality of a child's deep love for a subject. In this case, it's Sammy's love for dinosaurs, as represented by his collection of plastic dinosaurs. This isn't about materialism or toys, it's about him knowing all of their names, and their place in his heart. Lovely book.

(It was published in the U.K. as Harry and the Bucket of Dinosaurs, then got a name change to come across to the U.S. That practice in publishing, of changing the characters' names, continues to baffle me!)

This is an adorable book with beautiful and colorful illustrations. Harry finds a box of dinosaurs in Grandma's attic. He cleans them and repairs them. I love when he goes to the library to learn more about dinosaurs so he can give each one its proper dinosaur name. Harry brings the dinos with him wherever he goes and plays with them. Any young dinosaur fan would love this book!
The only problem I had was that it was hard to tell if the dinosaurs really talked to Harry or if this was just his own imagination. In the end it was impossible to tell. At this young an age, pretend vs real is a hard concept and this book makes that more confusing. I would have liked to see that Harry was pretending the dinosaurs came alive. The story is too figurative in that respect.
Would I recommend this book? YES. Dinosaur fans will love it and it teaches the concept of dinosaurs
