Not one of Hammett's best. The main character is unlikable, too much unnecessary explanations and descriptions of inconsequential characters confuses the reader. Hammett does not have his "Telegraphic" style here. He meanders. It is written more like a screenplay than a novel. Pass on this one, try "Red Harvest" instead.
