Sweet Molly Gibson was living life pleasantly when her widowed father decides that, for the good of his daughter, he must remarry. In comes Claire and Molly's life is turned upside down by the usually well meaning but off-the-mark Claire, who insists on things being done the proper way. Added to the stew is Claire's beautiful, educated daughter Cynthia, and the Hamleys, a well-to-do family headed by a squire who is not happy about the romantic interests of his sons.

Another wonderful BBC adaptation of an Elizabeth Gaskell novel; the characters, with the exception of the doctor and the Countess are a pretty wretched bunch, but it is fun watching them as they undoubtedly existed--and still exist, particularly in liberal enclaves.

Booooring! Couldn't bear to watch more than the first 20 or so minutes. The rich behaving boringly in the !800's in England. I detested the girl, the boy, and especially the father! Vacuous, vapid, moronic -- I need not go on. If you have a brain, don't watch this!

I read the book and watched the miniseries with one of my sisters. Both were really well done, although I liked the ending of the miniseries better!

Wow, great movie, a real gem ..... the Beeb and PBS pull it off again, the quality is so consistent on these Masterpiece Theatre type series that I search for them like a bloodhound ..... and never am disappointed....

I enjoyed Wives and Daughters but I feel that it didn't end. I had a set of three dvd's. Two were about the story and the third was about making the movie. Can someone tell me the ending? What I saw was Molly trying to arrange her step-sister's letters back and that was it.

If you like period dramas, give this mini series a try! It follows the book quite closely, and is one of my favorites--excellent casting. Elizabeth Gaskell conveys people and life with such timelessness. If you like this, you may also enjoy Cranford and North & South (not about the US civil War)

Entertaining view of early 19th century life and character of women and men.
Good acting.

What a thrill to discover that not every Victorian heroine adored her MaMA. This work, adapted by the estimable Andrew Davies, portrays a very modern and recognizable sensibility indeed. The very thought that a mother and daughter (never mind stepdaughter) might actually have an active antipathy towards each other is something new and refreshing. Although eventually smoothed over, the portrayal of sexual jealousy, cattiness, callousness, and overweening pride is a joy to behold amidst the petticoats, hairpieces and bodices. Gorgeous to look at, slyly observant, and beautifully acted, this adaptation by the Beeb is a total revelation. By the way, if there are any fans of the brilliant "Angels and Insects" out there, this is the work that obviously served as its inspiration.

Squire Hamley: “I’m not saying she (Miss Clare) was very silly, but one of us was very silly and it wasn’t me.”
