This depicts the men of Alpha Company. They battle the enemy (or maybe more the idea of the enemy), and occasionally each other. In their relationships we see their isolation and loneliness, their rage and fear. They miss their families, their girlfriends and buddies; they miss the lives they left back home. Yet they find sympathy and kindness for strangers (the old man who leads them unscathed through the mine field, the girl who grieves while she dances), and love for each other, because in Vietnam they are the only family they have.

It's a compelling story about war and the people sent to war. Some of it is fiction, some of it is fictionalized non-fiction, all of it is based on what Tim O'Brien experienced during his time in the military and what he and his friends experienced when they got out.

it really is a great book to discuss, as one doesn't know exactly which stories are real and which aren't. Some stories involve characters who existed, but died during the war and the writing is about what they would have done, what they would have experienced when they got out.

One of the most powerful war stories I've ever read. The audiobook makes the story even more compelling. The narrator brings the book to life and when I stopped the audio, I found that I couldn't wait to hear the next chapter. It was that good! You will not be disappointed!
