At their second home on the Isle of Skye, the Ramsay family surrounds itself with friends and colleagues. They contend with World War I, family deaths, and hardships both spoken and unspoken. All the while, the lighthouse looms in the distance. Six-year-old James asks his father to take him there, but many years will pass before the voyage begins.

At times the narration is so bland and monotone that it almost becomes like background noise, but at other times there are slight emphases made that well represent the stream of consciousness technique. It was still very difficult to make sense of it: there are shifting points of view and of time. Not much happens in the book, its more of a 'writerly'kind of book.
