The disappearance forty years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden, gnaws at her octogenarian uncle, Henrik Vanger. He is determined to know the truth about what he believes was her murder. He hires crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist, recently at the wrong end of a libel case, to get to the bottom of Harriet's disappearance. Lisbeth Salander, a twenty-four-year-old, pierced, tattooed genius hacker, possessed of the hard-earned wisdom of someone twice her age--and a terrifying capacity for ruthlessness--assists Blomkvist with the investigation. This unlikely team discovers a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running through the Vanger family, an astonishing corruption at the highest echelon of Swedish industrialism--and a surprising connection between themselves.--From publisher description.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo follows the unlikely duo of Mikael Blomkvist, a publisher under legal attack for libel, and Lisbeth Salander, an unusual private investigator. Salander’s brooding demeanor and punk-rock dressing style cause heads to turn, but she proves to be a capable if unethical P.I. Blomkvist takes an unexpected job investigating the billionaire Vanger family for its patriarch. Blomkvist gets established on the atmospheric Hedeby Island to look into the forty year past suspected murder of Harriet Vanger. After a humorous turn of events, Blomkvist enlists Salander to aid him in his investigation. Larsson’s gritty narrative takes the pair down a rabbit trail of accidental photographs. Tech-savvy Salander opens doors in the investigation and Blomkvist relentless curiosity propels them to the trail of serial killer through cryptic clues left by the disappeared Harriet. The case breaks wide open when the two stumble on a shockingly disturbing family secret that reveals the long-sought answer to the forty year mystery. Stieg Larsson’s 2008 novel feels like a slow burn but systematically builds to an intensifying conclusion that firmly establishes it as a first-rate mystery.

4 stars - a great first book in a series that has a lot to say about female empowerment.
Reader beware, these novels have graphic descriptions of rape and abuse.

The novel and the series as a whole plays out as a detective story. A journalist who is has some time on his hands before he goes to prison (apparently in Sweden, you are free to walk around after you have been found guilty but before you go to prison). Our hero journalist uses his time to solve the mystery of a woman who has been missing for many years. One of the clues is that one of the relatives has been receiving a pressed and framed flower every year.
The main character works alongside a female hacker to solve the myster. Digging into the family history of this missing woman, we learn there is a history of sexual abuse. Larson writes a great detective story, it unfolds well and the twists and turns are revealed in a way that kept me interested. The problem I had with the books is that the men in this story range from being in the wrong place at the wrong time, to being pigs. I do not have a problem with a female getting revenge on someone who wronged her. If there are so many depictions of men being predators / abusers of women, can we also balance the story with a female villain?
It should be pointed out that Steig Larson was influenced by witnessing a woman being raped, he was very young and did not or could not take action in time to prevent the woman being raped.

This was excellent and so disturbing at the same time. It's also book one of a trilogy. The story started of slow (like every book I've read with more than 600 pages) but be patient because the entire story comes together so perfectly. It's well written and despite being slow, it wasn't boring.

A discredited journalist is hired by a wealthy man to solve a murder. Parts of this book are disquieting enough that I would not recommend it to everyone.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is popular for a great reason - it's excellent. I've consumed hundreds, if not thousands of crime novels over the past forty years, and this is one of the best.

I like it because it was intricate. Details were not spared. When one of the characters furnishes an apartment with IKEA furniture, we get to read exactly what she bought. When someone puts on a disguise, we get the entire description. That satisfied me very much. The narrative and the crime were imaginative, creepy, and wholly believable. A very, very good book.

for those who long for a reality which enfolds females into that 'righteousness by rights of their gender.' the protagonist is small and light, but she has a ferocious will to get revenge against big bad men who have harmed her; she also possesses martial arts skills, which helps her when things get all violent and stuff. she is a computer expert, to boot. in other words, she is a superhero, but not of the marvel type or of the dc type. ///written by a swedish writer who died shortly after completing the sequel to this one, this is an extremely popular READ. what a dreamland to live in, while you turn the pages! when she does bad things, it is always against those who deserve it, lest we feel guilty for cheering her on.

I love books where I miss something. I won't tell you what I missed because it's a spoiler for all of it, but I can hardly wait for the second book to come off my holds list.

“Friendship- my definition- is built on two things. Respect and trust. Both elements have to be there. And it has to be mutual. You can have respect for someone, but if you don't have trust, the friendship will crumble.”

I’ve had many enemies over the years. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s never engage in a fight you’re sure to lose. On the other hand, never let anyone who has insulted you get away with it. Bide your time and strike back when you’re in a position of strength—even if you no longer need to strike back.

Fascinating story. Well written.
I found this book riveting, Entertaining and a great read.
Even though parts are not for the squeamish. And the end is a little anticlimactic. I would put this on My highly recommend list.
