Based on a true story it is, in its way, a horror story, this portrait of a dazzling young woman at the mercy of the misfortunes of love and the inequalities of the age in which she lived. Married off as an innocent 17-year-old to a much older man, his only interest in the match is her ability to produce a male heir. Installed within the gilded cage of marriage, she discovers he expresses more affection for his dogs than for her. When the first child is female, he takes a mistress and ignores her, until she finds true love--insisting on his lordly right to thwart her. Although she fights hard for her own piece of happiness, eventually, she has to make a choice many, many women will recognize.

Interesting portrayal of true slavery and entitlement.

Visually sumptuous, with a swelling score by Rachel Portman and fine acting from Ralph Fiennes and Charlotte Rampling. But more than that there is little to say ... or to recommend. Dominic Cooper (the improbable lover of the KK) is a monumental casting error.

I loved Knightley's performance. She made me like Georgiana a lot. Strong acting from both her and Fiennes. Beautiful, beautiful film!

In real life, the Duke was only 8 yrs. older than the Duchess, but in this production, the actor playing the Duke seems around 40ish. This makes a great difference in perception. Other than the miscasting, it was a beautiful film with superb acting all round.

Great entertainment. Interesting because based on true events and on-location shooting. K Knightley and R Fiennes give great performances.

Arranged marriage between a young, fashionable, beautiful Lady so and so, who is a progressive conservative (played by actress Keira Knightley), and a Duke who is a progressive liberal. She was enamored with her husband and thought he loved her, and he says he does in his own way. No one told her that he was very liberal with concubines and previous child or children. She disapproves of his affair with her best friend, another Lady so and so who is a victim of her husband's domestic violence. On and on it goes, and then the Duchess eventually helps along with what would be considered a dysfunctional family in many modern cultures. The cinematography was okay and the fashions of the day were exposed. Supposedly, this was based loosely on a true story. Still, it was too bourgeoisie.

Beautifully acted and cinematic period piece film. Keira Knightley is movie gold and a fine accomplished screen actress.

The double standard of life still continues. Marrying young for the purpose of family legacy.

Take a few details from the biography, concoct a lurid melodrama that strays about as far as possible from the actual facts, and there you have the movie.
Beautifully photographed.

Georgiana, The Duchess of Devonshire: [speaking about Charles Grey] We love each other.

Duke of Devonshire: I do not doubt it; he is a dreamer like yourself. You both dream of another world that does not exist, and never will.

Georgiana, The Duchess of Devonshire (to her husband): Of all the women in England, you had to throw yourself on her. I have never objected to any of your affairs. I have accepted whatever arrangement you have proposed. But this... I have one single thing of my own. Why couldn't you let me keep Elizabeth for myself? What kind of man are you? She is my sole comfort in our marriage. You have robbed me of my only friend. What is wrong with me?

[Georgiana pays a visit to Bess' room, where she's already in bed, to ascertain whether or not she enjoyed herself at the play. She sits down on the bed.]

Elizabeth "Bess" Foster: "I talked to Mr. Grey all evening."

Georgiana Spencer: "Oh, yes?"

Elizabeth "Bess" Foster : "He's in love with you."

Georgiana Spencer: "My dear Bess...No, he is not. Quite the reverse, I fear."

Elizabeth "Bess" Foster: "Well, can't you tell by the way he looks at you? Honestly, can't you tell?"

Georgiana Spencer: "Stop it."

Elizabeth "Bess" Foster: "Georgiana, intercourse is not just about offspring. In fact, it can be rather pleasurable."

Georgiana Spencer: "Yes, I know."

Elizabeth "Bess" Foster: "Close your eyes and try to envisage Grey opening your dress, kissing your back."

[Bess gets off the bed and comes around and sits behind Georgiana. She begins to slowly open Georgiana's robe, kissing her neck.]
