If you like The Passage by Justin Cronin

A human-created virus has infected humankind, mutating most into super strong, near-immortal vampiric creatures. The "virals" - also called "jumpers" - and "dracs" (after Dracula, of course) - can leap 20 feet through the air at a bound and split a human (or a horse, or a cow) in half with their bare hands. A small band of men and women embark on a cross-country trek, looking for a way to… (more)

Just watched the first season of the series, which was great. Del Toro has long been one of my favorite directors and given his deep knowledge of the horror genre, it's not surprising that he turned to fiction. This plays like a combination of apocalyptic plague story, survivor adventure tale, and vampire horror. Co-writer Chuck Hogan is best known for "The Town." The first in a trilogy.

Pretty good, but I like del Toro's work. Now it's on tv! LOL. I get to explain everything to my husband!

This is anything BUT a standard vampire story! It's extremely scary, well-written, and descriptive. The characters are well fleshed-out and because it's a trilogy, you really feel like you are going through this long ordeal with the characters. I actually cried at the end of the third book because it felt like such a long journey!

I definitely liked the first book the most out of the trilogy. But the series is a good read all around. I highly recommend.

I loved this book! I couldn't but it down. It had a very creepy vibe to it, which I loved.

The rest of the series is well done too, although the first book is the best of the three in my opinion.

Standard vampire tale of an outbreak of vampirism in New York. Includes the usual characters; Master Vampire; Old Romanian Professor, avaritious rich old man, CDC scientists. Not reccommended.

I thought the book was well writen particulary the early part in the airport thr coffin with dirt in it vanishing in thin air really scary stuff. after that the book dialog and plot was a bit lacking and unbelieveable.

This was a well written fictional book. It draws you in and is not the conventional vampire story. There is a good balance of conversation between characters, graphic description of scenes, and intense action. The book is somewhat of a dense read however. It progresses slowly, but overall is well worth the effort. I was somewhat disappointed with the end - which almost mandates a sequel by the reader.

I was so excited to read this and was just disappointed. The story starts off eerie and suspenseful and then just plateaus. At around page 200 I thought we were finally being told the back story that would take the story in a different direction, but all it did was tell us the same story over and over of how the strain spread from one person to another. It told us how it happened to every character. Completely overkill and to me assumes that del Toro didn't think his readers could figure out the grand scale of it spreading for themselves. I really wanted to like this book and gave it so many chances, but I just didn't like it. As an aside, I loved Pan Labyrinth which was a large factor in reading this.

Ephraim Goodweather, CDC guy, takes on the beginning of vampire virus pandemic. Nora, a biologist, assists, as well as Abraham, an old Jewish guy, who has spent his life preparing for the ultimate showdown with the Master vamp. The books ends when they corner the Master vamp, who escapes into daylight. Does that now make him invincible?
