If you are an American history "junkie" this work is acceptable, but just. The narrative plods along at a snail's pace and is full of historiography references. It won a pulitizer no doubt, because she qualifies every categorical statement and is extremely judicious. Don't buy in if you want a good historical escape story. If you are a professional historian, this work will be fine. I finished it, but it was tough going and I love history.
