While Americans spend more on health care than any other country in the western world, our hospitals and clinics kill more patients. Patient safety expert Dr. Peter Pronovost is working to remedy that, by changing the way hospitals and doctors function day to day. In fact, his ideas are already saving people. By introducing a five-step checklist that standardizes a common ICU procedure, Dr. Pronovost has decreased the rate of infection--and as a result, unnecessary deaths--across the country by 90 percent. In this book, Dr. Pronovost makes reform relatable, easy to understand, and inspiring.--From publisher description.

When I first heard this doctor in an interview, then read his book, I simply could not believe it! I was completely stupified at the level of abject incompetence in this venue! Unbelievable! But this is just the tip of the iceberg, as we now observe during October of 2014, when the nurses' union exposed the incredible shortcomings of the hospital administration and doctors at Texas Presbytarian Hospital in Dallas, for their absolutely irresponsible lack of initiating the proper protocols when dealing with Ebola patients. Checklists? I've been using them all my life, ever since I had to while in the US military!

This is a powerful, well-written book about how simple changes to the healthcare culture can have a meaningful impact on patient safety. On a higher level, it is a reinforcement of the idea that innovation frequently occurs when the lessons and techniques of one industry or field are applied to another.
