Pitt investigates the murder of a maid at Buckingham Palace, narrowing his group of suspects down to several house guests who are meeting with the Prince of Wales to discuss the funding of a huge project: the Cape to Cairo railway. While the Prince might overlook the unfortunate loss of a maid, the Queen, who is due back soon, will likely veto any Royal support in the scheme if she finds out.

Another great story by Anne Perry. A prostitute is found with her throat cut and belly slashed open in a closet in Buckingham Palace after a party hosted by the Prince of Wales whilst Queen Victoria is away in The Isle of Wight. I had a bit of a hard time keeping straight all the different characters . It was a surprise ending. I always enjoy Thomas Pitt stories.

Loved it. Very suspenseful. an enjoyable 'who done it?' in an unusual setting.
