THERE we go! Colin Meloy finally matures enough as a lyricist to craft witty, moving and excitingly original ballads while the rest of the band keeps the pace sprightly and fun. Add in Chris Walla working his usual subtle magic on the production, and it's no wonder this was the album that made The Decemberists famous.

An unseen beast trumpets mightily. There is a slight pause, then the drums approach, rolling across the sonic landscape. Picaresque, The Decemberists' densely-textured folk pop album, begins.
