Many scientific advances were exploited in the pursuit of fascist ideology while others, some of which became the greatest inventions of the 20th century, were ignored, irrelevant to the success of the Nazi cause. Hitler opposed smoking, which has killed more people than Hitler did. German scientists established the connection of smoking to cancer. The Nazi government warned against the dangers of smoking, especially for pregnant women, and managed to suppress it in some circumstances. Meanwhile in tobacco-growing America, smoking was heavily promoted and continued to be for many years.
