Like other books in this series, the actual mystery is secondary in interest to descriptions of contemporary China's politics and economy (often scathingly critical; the author lives in the US). For a break from the story, a number of scenes are set in restaurants where intriguing foods are set out for the pleasure of the characters. (Well, or not; you'll see.)

Well above formulaic mysteries, but the mystery plot leads the reader along.

Poetry, Megalomania, Chinese Opera and Mao's 'dancing partners' make a crazy mix in this Chief Inspector Chen mystery.
