I don't generally enjoy Paul Pope's art style or his general motifs. I don't know why i enjoy this graphic novel, but I really do. I have borrowed from the library several times to reread, and so I have to recommend it, but darned if I know what about this works makes it so compelling to me. Read it and judge for yourself i guess.

A few of the more ferocious looking panels are worth the price of admission alone but all in all this volume leaves far more questions than answers. Is this Batman Bruce Wayne? Sometimes you're convinced that it is when other times you're certain it can't be. Captain Gordon addresses him as Bruce Wayne but is that an alias as much as Batman is at this point. Who knows.

The world is fascinating because of the time jump and the dystopian aspects. We have a surveillance culture here and holograms and telepathy and a whole whack of very interesting things that just seem underused. It's fantastic seeing Batman, whoever he is, punching his way to justice in any timeline but with all these other elements in play this might as well have been Batman Year One rather than Year One Hundred.

Neo meets Bruce Wayne and the result is immersing. My only gripe is the presence of one too many action sequences near the end. Good job Mr. Pope!
