I've been looking at this book for a while, and it didn't seem very interesting, but when I finally took it off the shelf, I was immediately captured by this warming story, with glimpses of magic weaving in and out of the words.

Four grade 7 students in a Chicago school for the performing arts find their lives changing after they have possession of a medallion with an angel’s face on it. After Bette finds the medallion she begins a friendship with the new neighbour, Gabi, starts to cope with the feelings of abandonment she’s had since her mother’s death 2 years earlier and finds the courage to sing again. After Joe swipes the medallion when Bette leaves it on a desk, he finds his life changing. His mom, a single parent who has been sickly, gets a new doctor, his new friend Mike challenges him to think and act in new ways, and his bullying behaviour is challenged by kindness. As atonement for the bullying, Joe passes the medallion to Andy and his twin sister Vivian. Vivian’s health improves through the help of her new doctor, Dr. Rafael; she gains insight into the meaning of beauty while Andy gains confidence and maturity.
