The second book in a trilogy following Comissario De Luca, a former detective in Fascist Italy. The story begins a few weeks after the close of the first novel. As short and well crafted as the first installment, Carlo Lucarelli delivers an even better novel, expanding and working on De Luca's progress through the murk of post war Italy. On the run from his past as a servant of the black-shirt regime, physically ill, the detective clings to the pursuit of truth as the one sure means of maintaining his own identity and sanity in a world where everyone is discarding skins like so many serpents and revenge and power are cloaked in the name of justice.
