As a young girl Ana Cubillas is drawn to the exotic island of Puerto Rico and in twin brothers Ramon and Inocente-both in love with Ana-she finds a way to get there. She marries Ramon and convinces the brothers that their destiny is in the remote sugar plantation they’ve inherited on the island. But Ana’s fantasies haven’t prepared her for the unrelenting heat, the dangers of the untamed countryside, and the slave labor on which life at Hacienda Los Gemelos depends.

I heartily disagree with the other comments: I found this novel completely fascinating as a heroic and liberated 19th century woman survives every possible obstacle to save her beloved sugar plantation, set in a historical venue--Puerto Rico--a country I knew so little about.

Depressing at times, yes, but being a slave owner with a conscience during the time of the American emancipation of slavery.;when the sugar cane still had to be harvested.

After reading this very well-written book, I felt I had just finished Gone With the Wind, Puerto Rican style! A fabulous read!!

I agree with the comments. The plot had alot of potential, however was very depressing. There are so many other ways that the storyline could've gone and yet, it seemed to drudge on.

Since I heard such great things about this book, I was very excited when I got my hands on it.
And yet . . .
I found the writing stiff and forced and I did not like the plot!

It wasn't bad; it just wasn't good.

Heard so many good things about this book & author, and sorely disappointed once I finished. Reads like almost any other throwaway romance novels. Kinda had to force myself to finish. The 1st paragraphs & 1st chapter kinda gives you an idea how the rest of the book will flow. Didn't like all the unnessesarly flowery prose.

Not what I was hoping it would, or could be. I was bored by page 40.

Good read, but not something I would read again and again. I never expected this book to be as depressing as it actually was. The main character, Ana, ends up being conquered in every possible way while still managing to end the line of a once prosperous and promising family just for the sake of living out these fantastic ideas of her destiny that she thought up as a teenager.
