In 2009, Delaware River Basin native Josh Fox was presented with an interesting proposal: lease his family lands to a natural gas company for a new method of drilling called hydraulic fracturing, and get a check for $100,000. He wouldn't have to do anything but sit back and collect the money. Curious about the process, Fox embarks on an exploration of other areas where natural gas drilling was already in progress, to observe firsthand any potential downsides. Fox goes on to tour 25 states, cataloging an endless string of frustrated and sick Americans whose land has become toxic and explaining the legislation pushed through by former vice president Dick Cheney, exempting energy companies from key environmental acts--exemptions that make fracking invisible to any regulation or monitoring. The film documents the pitfalls and perils--borne of avarice of the most bloodless, ruthless kind--of the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in American history, with the potential to poison millions.

Filmmaker Josh Fox drives cross-country on a fact-finding mission. Gasland pairs well with PBS documentary "Bigger Than Enron": both tell how people typically (here, mostly men in leading corporate positions) lie, cheat, fabricate company performance, numbers and mission and (in Gasland) even kill to obtain and retain money and power. In the film incredulity seems to be a pacifier, but then constructive anger is stumped for solutions to local fracking. Another obstacle: people in state governments like New York state have investments in the fracking industry.

This eye opening well made documentary by first time filmmaker Josh Fox exposes the completely legal and absolutely criminal acts of 'Big Oil' and the loopholes they take advantage of. These environmental 'rapists' avoid any accountability for poisoning the air and the groundwater as they drill for natural gas (and profits) at an ever expanding and alarming rate. There is virtually no overseeing regulatory commission, due to budget cuts and their exemption of responsibility to the Clean Water Act. I've taken notice recently (since viewing this film) of 'Conoco' TV commercials boasting how 'clean' natural gas is. 'Naturally', no mention of the repercussions. Disgusting. Disturbing. Despicable. Deplorable. Distressing. Disastrous. Depressing. No happy ending here. Well done, Mr. Fox. FIVE STARS.

Without a doubt, this very informative documentary offers much more than what we get from mainstream news sources. “Gasland” is must-see for everyone. Note: HBO is currently airing “Gasland 2”.

A shocking chronicle of political dereliction, business greed, and environmental catastrophe from natural gas fracking across the United States. Is 'burning' water coming to northeastern British Columbia? The constantly jiggling hand-held video camera became vertigo-inducing so I found myself closing my eyes and simply listening to the dialogue.

A good film for revealing serious concerns about the fracking industry to the ignorant.

Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) is the latest method allowing us to extract huge supplies of natural gas that were previously not accessible. If you are wondering if it is a good idea, watch this film before making up your mind. It tells the stories of the many families throughout the US whose properties and water supplies have been destroyed by the fracking process. The process uses and pollutes huge volumes of water and injects more than 500 different chemicals into the eco-systems.
