I guess I differ on this. Salter's style is exquisite. Detailed, nuanced. It could be that the subjects he focuses on turns off some readers. He deals with -- mostly -- a 'favored class' of people. In this collection, though, their dissatisfactions and failures contrast with the simplicity and clear conscience of the characters in the last story.

I found the writing style intolerable.
