If you want to be talked down to by a yuppie who has an apparent physical NEED to mention that she doesn't own a television, doesn't eat out-of-season foods, doesn't vaccinate because whooping cough can be cured with hot tea and rest, then by all means, prepare for Wendy Brown's Apocalypse.

For the "serious" apocalypse preparer: Go to the internet and print out actual schematics instead of listening to Wendy yammer on about how satisfied she is with her own (unillustrated) craftsmanship.

For the "fun" apocalypse preparer: Wendy doesn't discuss sawed off shotguns vs. katanas. Skip this one.

For the deranged yuppie housewife who abandoned Martha Stewart because of "sustainability concerns": You've found your book.

If you want to learn how to prepare for a disaster, but are put off by the stridency of survivalists and their talk of "the zombie hordes", then check out Surviving the Apocalyse in the Suburbs. Wendy Brown is a mother of three who worked a stint in the U.S. military. Hence, she places more emphasis on laundry than guns. She advocates sheltering in place at your existing home during The End of the World as We Know It, instead of bugging out to a rural hideaway. She offers the reader a 21-day schedule to ramp up for the coming troubles. Surviving the Apocalypse in the Suburbs is a kinder, gentler, less alarming manual than classics by Jim Rawles. You will find it has practical and much less expensive solutions for your disaster preparations.
