Fantastic film. One of the key ones that inspired me to become a filmmaker.

This is an Akira Kurosawa film with Toshiro Mifune as the title Samurai character. I found that reading the booklet that came with the Dvd helped me understand some of the problems they had with the making of this movie and the ingenious solutions they came up with. Like a Camellia Bush that had to have fake Leaves and flowers because the real things would not hold together and more...

Good – Yojimbo (1961) 110 min. [Foreign - Japanese] The film was definitely inspired by the American western and the film itself became a platform for the creation of the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns of the 1960s. Loaded with great images, Yojimbo still holds up in the new millennium.

Humourous yet thought-provoking, this film is one of the best samurai movies in Japan.
Mind-boggling is the last duel scene of Sanjuro and Hanbei---the antagonist.
The behind-the-scene story reveals that the shocking "blood explosion" at the duel was done in one take.
At the moment when the compressor hose attached to actor Tatsuya Nakadai (who played Hanbei) was activated, it blew a coupling that caused a much larger gush of fluid than planned.
It was so strong that it nearly lifted him off the ground and it took all his might to keep himself on the ground.
Indeed, he acted marvelously!

Follow-up to YOJIMBO, with more humour and better characters. Less complicated plot, though, but in some way more satisfying. Possibly it's the wit which makes this such a success, plus the reduction of violence and manly feats of sword-play. Whatever it is, this is good.

This is an amzing film. If you enjoy spagetti westerns it's time you see how Sergio Leone was inspired.

Violence: One character gets an arm chopped off. But on the whole nothing brutal no heads and limbs falling off left right and center. It's more entertainment fighting based on the character's power over his opponents obviously Mifune prevails over his opponents.
