"Colonel de Luce, in desperate need of funds, rents his beloved estate of Buckshaw over to a film company. They will be shooting a movie over the Christmas holidays, filming scenes in the stately manse with a famous and reclusive star. She is widely despised, so it is to no one's surprise when she turns up murdered, strangled by a length of film from her own movies! With the snow raging outside and Buckshaw locked in, the house is full of suspects. But Flavia de Luce is more than ready to solve the wintry country-house murder. She'll have to be quick-witted, though, to negotiate the volatile chemicals of a cast and crew starting to crack--and locked in a house with a murderer!"

A fun, holiday story. Flavia de Luce is an enjoyable character.
This story was a bit weak in the mystery but the back story more than made up for it. We learn more about Flavia's family and the villagers with every book.

The narration by Jayne Entwistle is wonderful. She is the perfect Flavia de Luce.

I am Half-Sick of Shadows is the fourth in the series set in post war England which features now 12-year old Flavia de Luce. Flavia solves murder mysteries using her knowledge of chemistry and analytical capabilities all the while driving her older sisters crazy and her widowed father to distraction. In this entry Flavia, a film company, and the local villagers, are trapped in the family estate over Christmas due to a snow storm. Naturally, there’s a murder that Flavia has to solve. In a convergent side plot Flavia schemes to trap Father Christmas to determine whether or not he’s real. The results are delightful and should produce a few chuckles along the way. This is the first murder mystery I have read that I would recommend for young readers as well as adults.

*** 1/2 stars. First of all, I am in love with precocious 11-year-old Flavia de Luce, the heroine of this mystery series. She has her own chemistry lab and is far too smart for her own good. It?s Christmastime, and Flavia is tucked away in her laboratory, whipping up a concoction to ensnare Saint Nick. She must know "scientifically", once and for all, if he really exists. This may sound like at best an amusing subplot, but Bradley incorporates Flavia?s trap into the main mystery. "I am half-sick of shadows" is a quote from Tennyson's "The Lady of Shallot" who is tired of living a shadow life and wants to engage the real world. Due to financial problems, Flavia?s father rents the family estate Buckshaw to a film company over the holidays. The title most aptly applies to the lead actress in the movie production. One of the actors is murdered on a night when practically the entire village is stranded at Buckshaw during a snowstorm. Shadows is the most Agatha Christie-like of Bradley?s mysteries, featuring a classic country house whodunnit. The mystery itself is an intellectual puzzle, with wonderfully placed clues and red herrings. This is book 4 in the series. I recommend the books and especially love to listen to these mysteries and Flavia's unique voice.

Another wonderful book by Alan Bradley! The action here takes place at Buckshore, which is snowed in right at Christmas. When a film crew arrives on location at Buckshore, old emotions surface and a murder occurs. Of course, Flavia DeLuce and the Inspector are on hand to solve the case. The nasty sisters, Phily and Daffy and on hand as well, as are the ever faithful Dogger and Mrs. Mullet. Love these books. If you have the time, borrow the CD copy. The reader, Jane Entwhistle, reads all the titles and I think she's the best reader I've ever heard.
