A great science fiction adventure for teens. The book opens with Everett Singh’s father, a quantum physicist, being kidnapped right in front of him. Then he receives a computer program containing the only copy of Dr. Singh’s research, a map of the multiple universes reachable through the Heisenberg Gate built by his research team. Everett discovers that not only his own government, but those of several other worlds much further along in such research will do anything to get the program. Fleeing them, he sets out to find his father, a prisoner in the world E3. He finds refuge with the crew of a small, independent airship of E3, the Everness. The science fiction elements of the worlds are very well done, plausible in their detail, as are the social and cultural aspects. It’s really refreshing to read a book where the highly intelligent youth is the hero in his own right. Everett is a great main character and Sen, the odd young tarot-reading pilot of the Everness, is a very good partner for him, spontaneous, whimsical, and unpredictable. This is the start of a very enjoyable adventure series, and should also appeal to adult science fiction readers looking for something on the shorter and lighter side that yet isn’t thin in concept or childish in approach.

A fast-paced intro to SF master Ian McDonald's three-dimensional imagination. Perhaps a few too many coincidences for five stars, but still a great offering with memorable characters.
