Have you ever wondered what your dog is thinking?
Ini Garth Stein's special adaptation for young people of his acclaimed New York Times bestselling adult novel The Art of Racing in the Rain, readers will meet one funny dog: Enzo, the lovable mutt who tells this story.
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs. Most dogs love to chase cars, but Enzo longs to race them.
He learns about racing and the world around him by watching TV and by listening to the words of his best friend, Denny, an up-and-coming race car driver, and Denny's daughter, Zo#65533;, his constant companion. Enzo finds that life is just like being on the racetrack--it isn't simply about going fast.
Applying the rules of racing to his world, Enzo takes on his family's challenges and emerges a hero. In the end, Enzo holds in his heart the dream that Denny will go on to be a racing champion with his daughter by his side.
For theirs is an extraordinary friendship--one that reminds us all to celebrate the triumph of the human (and canine) spirit.

Add a CommentI didn't know there was a child's version. I've only read the adult version, which is truly one of the best books I've ever read (and I've read a LOT of books in the past almost 60 years!) The adult version had me in tears at times. Full of pathos and wisdom.
This book has been on my shelf for a long time, but I had never actually read it...until yesterday. Yesterday, I was going to read a book so I glanced at my bookshelf looking for the perfect book to snuggle up with. I looked and this book stood out in the crowd. "Well, I've never really read this...just the beginning. Anyways, it's about a dog so I already know I'm going to love it." I thought. I was absolutely right!!! It was about a lovable dog named Enzo and his AMAZING story. It's kind of like the movie Marley & Me, except, from a dog's point of view. Enzo tells a happy, funny, and sad story. This book, unlike others, makes you stay on your toes wondering what is next. I think everyone would like this book, and I would recommend it to every one of my friends. This booked has 288 pages (I think I might be a few pages off) so I would recommend it to advanced 5th graders and up! :) Have fun reading this book!! ;)
hello
This book has such potential for my boys to enjoy, and it missed the mark. Too much racing lingo that my boys just are not into.
At first I thought I had the adult version of the book, but the children's version kept me interested in what Enzo, the dog had to tell me about family, life, and racing cars.
I don't know how Garth Stein made it into the head of a dog, but he has me convinced that dogs really think this way. I was reminded of the novel "Ishmael" which I read ages ago in which another animal gives his views of human life on the planet.
an excellent book !!! a wonderful story for everyone. if in a way not realistic it is full of life wisdom, philosophy and character of both 2 and 4 legged beings , with a fascinating and captivating story !!!
Chronicles the life of a beloved dog from his perspective. Wonderful story of the love and devotion of a family dog. Enzo provides a unique perspective!
