A too-long adaptation of Steinbeck's great book. Many events are faithfully represented: the boys' harsh upbringing and Adam's move to California, the crucial discussion of people's free will, Cathy's sociopathic nature, etc., but there are misses. For example, it's not clear why Abra chooses Cal (in the book it's very clear) and there's no appearance of Samuel's wife, Liza, who played a counterpart to his idealism. I'll recommend the book over this mini-series.

This production contains some of the worst acting and production quality I have ever seen. Really poorly done. I am going to look for a better version of it since it is such a classic. Or I guess I could just read the book.

It was O.K for a home TV movie. I was entertained and interesting. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box.

Follows the book much better than the James Dean version but the acting is pretty cheesy.

this was such a good film! it could easily be calld " A Short Study of Humanity." Its all there: revenge, jealousy, pride, love, sacrifice, and the will to choose, each one living with one's own actions and decisions because "Thou Mayest"

This set of DVDs is far superior to the 2-hour movie (with James Dean) of 1954.
I found that this beautiful, thoughtful, and well-acted serial helped me understand the novel better. I specifically appreciate the way it highlights some of the reasons why Cathy acted the way she did. I feel grateful I was able to enjoy the story and its message--all over again!
