Spanning Virginia's history from the founding of the colony up to 1915, the encyclopedia provides brief biographies of eminent citizens, including founders, presidents, governors, burgesses, senators, judges, and revolutionaries. The first three volumes were written by Tyler, who was president of William and Mary College in 1915. Supplementary volumes four and five were edited by Tyler and contain longer biographies written by staff of the Lewis Historical Publishing Company. Many of the more extensive biographies include portraits. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
