As an African American woman who once lived in Paris, I of course felt a great affinity for this story, but historical details aside, it was too poorly written to hold my interest. The protagonist is immature, incomstent, and frankly uninteresting, and the supporting characters are little more than propos. Only Ruby, the mysterious figure whose story Nicole attempts to reconstruct brings any vitality to the story.
