It is 1944 and thirteen year-old Tolly Oldknow is sent to spend Christmas with his grandmother, whilst his mother searches for news of his father in wartime London. In the old house, he becomes a witness to events during the Napoleonic wars and finds himself slowly drawn into participating in the drama. Invisible to most people in the past, he begins to unravel the mystery which has bewildered his family for two centuries. The solution to the puzzle leads him into his greatest adventure yet.

I liked this DVD. It has some dramatic moments. It has a sad ending as expected dealing with an a young person dying from illness. The script is strong. It is well acted. It is good for all ages. The story is slow moving. You may relate to the experience of the actors. I like Maggie Smith as an actress. Maggie had a minor role in this film.

A boy staying with his grandmother in her old mansion meets some of the past residents. He interacts with these ghosts to learn the truth about a family mystery. Some plot holes, but Maggie Smith is excellent as usual.

I've always been a big Alex Etel fan. Ever since Millions (2004). He's got an open, emotional delivery that rings true.

Really enjoyed this story, also the book. Family film, but a little scary for smaller children (maybe).

From Time to Time

Set in post-war England, this movie is a ghost story set in a rather creepy moldering mansion with a sinister background. It's not particularly scary, but it is fun to watch. The writer/director is Julian Fellowes of Downton Abbey fame, and there are a few actors in it who would go on to become characters in Downton Abbey. It's not nearly as interesting or polished as DA, but still fun to watch. Maggie Smith is the matriarch who lovingly counsels her grandson through his startling adventures with the resident ghosts and who goes on to solve an old mystery and save the family home. The wonderful cast and script raise this above the average cosy mystery. Well worth watching.

Super movie. Good family storyline set in WW II with a time travel adjunct. Excellent acting as well. A good watch.
