A lot of lifelong DC fans have been very critical of the whole "New 52" reboot, but I came to both this collection as well as the Flash relaunch as a relative DC neophyte and found it to be extremely well written and illustrated, in both layout and tone a major departure from some of the visual-rich but dialogue-light comics from the Marvel side I've been reading (and enjoying) lately. Superman comes across as refreshingly conflicted and relatable throughout, and the threat he faces is mysterious and interesting enough to keep the reader engaged.

A fairly soft reintroduction of Kal-El in the New 52 Universe. Clark has a new origin, a new costume, a new attitude, he no longer works for the Daily Planet and isn't married to Lois Lane! These really took some getting used to and this first arc did nothing to explain the changes.

It's well done, and it is hardly Perez's fault, but we have seen all this before, and not just once. The New 52 provides some freshness and some new looks, but not much. Perez is working hard to make the cast, Lois, Perry, Jimmy, et al more interesting, but that has been done before too.
